The single, long-stemmed rosebud in a tall vase is almost iconographic of romance. In this version, I played with proportion, line, and color to emphasize and parody the sexual undertone of the now cliché classic. The result borders on the lurid or unseemly, yet retains a degree of affectless grace.
The bud itself is somewhat gargantuan and constructed of irregular shapes of Purpleheart bonded with pigmented epoxy before turning. The thorns, too, are oversized. The single small leaf seems to be desperately clinging to some remnant of normalcy. Otherwise graceful legs are attached to the body of the vase at a point a little too high for decorum and have an arachnid quality that I especially like.
