This was a commissioned work. The client had complained that all CD storage solutions looked the same (and not good). Large-capacity solutions were the worst, presenting monolithic walls of indistinguishable plastic splines, or employing overly-complex vertical drawers and taking too much floor space. Even the most "finished" cabinets lacked an interesting style. As if this wasn't enough, many only worked with single jewel-cases, requiring re-packaging of double CDs, boxed sets, and even the occasional paper sleeve. This piece was my answer to those concerns.
The cabinet is 2'-6" wide and 7' tall. It provides storage for 560+ CDs, while allowing those in the top bin to be readable (and reachable) by people 5' tall. The bins are tied together in a ladder-type arrangement, opening in unison. Because the pivot point is carefully placed near the center of gravity for each bin, it is possible to open the case, even when fully loaded, with very little effort. When closed, the case displays book-matched raised panels in African mahogany. The saw-tooth side panels are designed to support all eight bins in both closed and open positions. Because the bins pivot, no handles or other external hardware is necessary. A slight downward push on any of the front panels causes the entire case to break open almost magically.
I really like this piece. When it was delivered, the new owners spent ten minutes repeatedly opening and closing the unit. There is something very fun, almost secret-door-like, about causing such a large cabinet to reveal it's treasures with such a small gesture. When closed, the case is stately and controlled, only hinting at something unexpected within.
(Note: Although I do not reproduce my work, I did build a prototype of this piece that is available for sale. It is smaller and constructed from domestic woods, but functions identically to the large case. If you are interested, please read the Purchase Information page and contact me.)
