I know that purists won't play chess on anything but a standard black-and-white board with traditional pieces. This set works fine for us non-purists, and is a lot more fun. The board consists of 64 individually cut and inlayed pieces of Purpleheart and Padouk. The fairly low contrast between the colors is mitigated by wavy Maple lines between the "squares". Its difficult to see in the photograph, but the grain-lines are continuous along each row and column. The board maintains all the necessary geometries for play, but seem less rigid, less artificial than abutting squares. The pieces (see note below) are big and well-weighted. They have traditional profiles, but the contracting colors look like petroglyphs. They are easily identifiable, and yet retain a great deal of character. The table itself boasts very simple, dainty construction. There's room to store the playing pieces under the lid, and the wings are a handy place to put captured pieces. (Note: When I built the table, I did not build an accompanying chess set. I have now built a set, but haven't had a chance to take new photos - coming soon.)
